Sure, Memorial Day is a great excuse for backyard barbecues and a relaxing three-day weekend, but it’s first and foremost a time to remember our fallen heroes and the men and women who have served (and are serving) our country. Here is a list of events and deals around the east valley this weekend that will help you do just that.

Memorial Day in Litchfield Park

Head out to the World War II Memorial on Litchfield Elementary School grounds to remember the fallen soldiers on Monday, May 25. The city will be remembering the fallen at a Memorial Day Ceremony. It will be a 30-minute event and will include floral tributes. It begins at 7 a.m. and is free. For more information visit litchfield-park.org.

Phoenix Memorial Observance Day

The Pioneers’ Cemetery Association will host its 32nd annual Memorial Day observance. It will be held at the Pioneer and Military Memorial Park in Phoenix. It will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday and will include featured speaker author Jana Bommersbach. There will be free parking. For more information visit azhistcemeteries.org.

Memorial Day Picnic

The Arizona Academy of the Performing Arts is hosting a Memorial Day Picnic on Monday, May 25 at noon. The picnic will be held at Campo Verde High School in Gilbert and will cost $5 to attend. Lunch is free and includes hot dogs, beans, salad and a dessert. Public is invited  to attend. For more information visit arizonaacademy.org.

ASU Symphonic Carillon

Join ASU in honoring Memorial Day with this concert held to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country. Friday, May 29 from noon to 1 p.m. on the ASU Tempe campus at Old Main. For more information visit asu.edu/vppa/carillon.

Scottsdale Memorial Day Event

Honor those who have fallen at the Chaplain Statue at Scottsdale City Hall on Memorial Day. The event will be hosted by local veteran groups on Monday, May 25 at 10 a.m. Public is invited. For more information call (480) 941-0130.

9th Annual Flags For Our Fallen Memorial Day Rally

Commemorate Memorial Day with American flags. Join the flag display and salute along with an official ceremony at the Phoenix National Cemetery. The event is free but you have the option to sponsor a flag for a $10 donation. Dozens of flags will be flown in memory of fallen soldiers. For more information visit ridersusa.net.

Wet ‘n’ Wild Memorial Day Weekend Fireworks and BBQ

On Sunday, May 24 Wet ‘n’ Wild Phoenix will host a fireworks show beginning at 9:45 p.m. The Red Rock Ravine Picnic area will be open for seating and will be the best viewing area. There will also be an all-you-can-eat BBQ dinner. Meal tickets are available to purchase online and at guest services. It is recommended that you pre-purchase your meal in advance as there is limited seating.
